Hi all,Sorry to start with a request for help, but.I am a 43 years old male living in Italy, and got a 1390T two weeks ago, after getting fed up with the Nokia N96 rebooting randomly when using the GPS. The large screen is a nice improvement, but I am having some problems, and would welcome your suggestions/tips. I have extensive experience with PCs, embedded software and linux, being a IT guy for the last 25 years. The first problem I have is that POIs don't show in the extra category, even if I still get warnings from the speed camera POIs (autovelox), for which I ended up copying by hand the gpi file to the /Poi folder in my Garmin.I've tried everything, and any POIs (mine or downloaded autovelox) don't show, even if POI loader claims a successful transfer.
Garmin CSV POI Garmin GPX POI Garmin upload (direct) Garmin MP3 (Audio alert for Garmin POI file) Garmin WAV (Audio alert for Nuvi models) Garmin GPX (proximity alert, phone dial, etc.) Garmin POI (Custom POI with extended info) DB3 POI format (One click updates) TomTom POI TomTom POI (Custom POI with extended info).
Garmin Poi Files
- POI Loader for Windows allows you to load custom points of interest into your unit. The input files can be downloaded from the internet or you can create your own. With POI Loader for Windows, you can configure the unit to alert you when you are within a certain distance of a point or if you are driving over a certain speed near a point.
- POI Loader is free software for your computer that lets you upload customized points of interest (POIs) to your compatible Garmin device. With the help of POI Loader, you can update your compatible Garmin GPS with the latest POIs, including restaurants, safety camera locations and tourist destinations.
I've used glx or csv files, converted from the Nokia format, to get my previous favourites loaded, and in the end I only could get them to show (either in Extras or Favourites) was to load them into MapSource and use MapSource to transfer them to the 1390T. Like that they will show in the favourites.I've contacted Garmin support, and after two weeks of emails and a long phone call, the only suggestions were to wait for the next firmware update, and if that won't fix it, to send it for repairs after easter. Anyone seeing anything similar with their units? The second problem is that sometimes voice navigation becomes silent, and going to the volume settings screen hangs the 1390T, forcing me to do a reset (4 seconds+ holding power), which I really would rather not do while driving. Once again, I ask if anyone has seen this? Thanks!
Update - as I was answering this message, I was also reinstalling the maps update and the firmware update (3.70). Afterwards, suddenly I have the POIs showing on 'Where to-Extras-Custom POI'.Strange, as I'd been there, done that. I usually run Linux, but have a windows partition on one of my PCs just for these things. And I had already used POI Loader exactly as you described, as well as tried tried Garmin supplied gpi files. The strangest thing is that I got the custom icons to show and heard the custom alerts, but the 'Where to-Extras' folder was empty when I tried to search a destination. Now everything seems to have been fixed with the reinstalls. I didn't even have to re-upload the POIs - they're already there from before the reinstall.
